What is a Cotinine test?

This Better2Know Cotinine test will measure how much tobacco smoke you have been exposed to or how much nicotine you have taken if you are on nicotine replacement therapy. Cotinine is a metabolite of nicotine, a material left over after your body has processed the nicotine you have ingested. Cotinine is therefore a good indicator of whether you have been smoking or taking nicotine and will also tell you how long ago you were last exposed to nicotine. Cotinine will stay in the body for up to around 20 hours after exposure to nicotine, whereas nicotine itself will only be detectable for two to three hours after ingestion. This test requires a blood sample that will be taken by a doctor or nurse from your arm.
